Jim’s Last Birthday

From napowrimo.net: For today’s challenge, write a poem in which laughter comes at what might otherwise seem an inappropriate moment – or one that the poem invites the reader to think of as inappropriate.

Jim’s Last Birthday

Type 1 diabetes at age seven
He knew early on he’d go to heaven
sooner than later he said
you can sleep when you’re dead
in his 30s surgery open heart
that went over like a popcorn fart
in the early 40s kidneys failed
was full of grace when he could have wailed
needed a transplant but odds where high
found a match let’s go high five
during the final check up cancer was found
but still this man you can’t keep him down
it spread though and he died in my arms
now he’s in heaven just like you read
sooner than later
you can sleep when you’re dead
