Have you ever had surgery? What for?
I was just thinking about this the other day while counting how many surgeries I’ve had because of breast cancer. Here goes:
2010 – bilateral mastectomy with immediate tissues expander placement
2010 – removal of both tissues expanders because of sepsis and an E. coli infection
2011 – placement of both tissue expanders after the healing from chemotherapy
2011 – tissue expanders exchanged for silicone implants
2016 – replacement of silicone implants to correct placement because of extensive scar tissue
2023 – emergency removal of left breast implants because of sepsis occurring after biopsy; diagnosed with a second primary cancer in left breast and lymph nodes, ER positive. First time in 2010, it was in my right breast, triple negative breast cancer no lymph node involvement
2023 – placement of tissue expander in left breast to keep pocket open after chemotherapy and before 28 radiation sessions
Aaaaand guess what? In less than two weeks, I’m getting a new set of silicone implants placed! What a long, difficult, and very painful journey. When I lost my left breast after my second diagnosis, I felt so beaten but a good friend of mine told me that Amazonian warrior women would have one of their breasts removed so she would be a better archer. That was empowering and I stood a bit straighter, chin up, and my head held a little higher. These are my warrior scars. I am strong, There’s a saying that scars are a reminder that something tried to hurt or kill you but you survived. They are my battle wounds and I’m not done yet. Never giving up. #breastcancerwarrior
